Witness to an extraordinary doctor

I was a nurse in training at Massachusetts General Hospital in the mid-1950s. All of us who were assigned to medicine were treated to the warm, consistent, and caring cardiac nursing care knowledge that was imparted to us by Dr. Roman DeSanctis (“After 6 decades of devotion, the doctor is out,” Page A1, Jan. 31). I cannot count the nights I went off duty at 11:30 p.m. and headed to my dorm after a long shift, knowing that Dr. DeSanctis was trying to get some sleep in any available examining room so as to be close to his critically ill patients.

We and the world were witnessing the burgeoning career of a giant in medicine, who never, for a moment, lost his intense and compassionate investment in the human dimension of his patients or colleagues.
