IT IS heartening to see Mitt Romney standing up to the Republican presidential primary race to the far right ( “Romney proposes wide cuts to budget,’’ Page A1, Nov. 5).
He is not going to pander. No, not Romney.
He wants huge cuts in Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, Amtrak, the national endowments for the arts and humanities, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and legal services for the poor.
Not enough? Romney advocates slashes in subsidies for family planning services and tests for cervical cancer and sexually transmitted diseases because these groups provide abortion or abortion-related services.
He stands with God, saying that it is “immoral to imperil the strength of a nation that was founded under God and preserved by his hand.’’
Good grief. This is what passes for a moderate Republican?
