Instead of trashing police benefit, scold state for closing its purse

THE GLOBE’S lead Nov. 17 editorial “In dispute over police benefit, don’t leave cities holding bag’’ has things backward. Instead of supporting abandonment of the Quinn Bill, which the editorial characterizes as a “windfall’’ for the officers who earned it, the Globe should be asking why the state “washed its hands’’ at honoring its 50 percent commitment to funding it.

I am not a police officer, but I know officers with two or three children in school and mortgages to pay who have lost a significant portion of their incomes because the state welched on its obligations. It is time to set this right and stop messing around with hard-working people’s livelihoods.
