STEWARD HEALTH Care System has been selected by Medicare to participate in the Pioneer accountable care program. Out of more than 5,000 hospitals nationally, Steward is one of 32 to be selected by the federal government.
It is understandable that innovations in health care may raise some curiosity. Most recently, a concerned person wrote to the Globe that “Steward is part of the attempt to rein in spending - not a bad thing, until it refuses to pay for my treatment under a system of accountable care’’ ( “On alert over Steward’s system for reining in health care costs,’’ Letters, Jan. 5). This is not a managed care plan. The Pioneer program will guarantee Medicare beneficiaries access to the same services and providers as they had previously.
Moreover, Steward’s goal under Pioneer is to cut costs through providing better, more efficient care and helping patients stay healthy through advances that we are already making in our system. Specifically, we have adopted information technology to improve coordination and reduce duplicative testing, renovated facilities to improve the patient experience, and are implementing protocols to prevent complications during and after hospitalization.
Our participation in Medicare’s Pioneer program is a natural fit with our mission to provide world-class health care in the community where our patients live. We look forward to continuing to deliver comprehensive, high-quality care to our patients.
