So whenever something good happens it's all "Praise god!!" but when something bad happens we brought it on ourselves? Sounds like an abusive relationship to me.

When good things happen, someone is following their conscience which is god's best plan for us. When bad things happen, someone has strayed from their core ethics & morals and is no longer following their true conscience. Some stuff is just luck or mother nature (spin the genetic lottery wheel or live in tornado alley)but the choices people make are definitely either living within their god-given conscience or outside it. God isn't a chessmaster who spends the day moving pieces around a board making people's lives happy or sad. The higher universal power I choose to call god gives us internal direction at birth. Following it (or not) is called free-will. Either good or evil can be the result.
