Verb misused to describe outrageous act

IN REGARD to your front-page March 12 headline “US soldier executes 16 Afghans’’: I wish to object to the word “executes.’’ It implies an act authorized by a government, perhaps after due legal process. The word you might have used more correctly is “kills,’’ if not “murders.’’
