Executive pay has lost touch with notion of corporate mission

The problem is that there is no standard way to set executive compensation, other than comparing with other executives, which, as Brian McGrory has pointed out in his colums about excess at Liberty Mutual, ratchets up pay without commensurate increases in investment performance, writes Michael E. Malamut. Some sort of benchmark is needed to return the corporate focus where it belongs: maximizing shareholder value.
