Amy Finch writes: Songbirds might not be safe with cats on the loose, but neither are cats. That’s why the Animal Rescue League of Boston, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society of the United States, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and other animal-protection groups strongly oppose letting cats outside.

You've forgotten to include other cats as one of the most significant threat to cats outdoors.
Some cats can be content without going outside, others can't. Certainly cats are safer inside - I would also be safer if I never left the house, but that's not a life I'd care to live. Cats don't have the ability to weigh the risks and benefits of outdoor vs. indoor life themselves, so it's up to their owners. I make the choice for them that I hope someone would make for me. They go out.
