State should explore new floating bridge

The perpetual delays in driving over the two chokepoint bridges to Cape Cod warrant the formulation of a plan for an additional, novel, and relatively inexpensive floating bridge (“Bridge work frays tempers, hurts shops,” Page A1, May 16). The state of Washington has four floating bridges. Its Hood Canal floating bridge is located in a saltwater, tidal fjord with tides of 16 feet, which are twice what the Cape Cod Canal experiences.

As a former officer in the Army Corps of Engineers with experience in building many types of bridges, the floating bridge I envision would be simpler than the Hood Canal floating bridge, which has a retractable span of 600 feet that has to be slid on rollers under another section that has to be raised, in order to let submarines pass.
