letters | FEDERAL IMMIGRATION PROGRAM MAKES ITS WAY TO MASS.

Immigration policy smacks of creeping fascism

Your article on resistance to the policy with the Orwellian name, Secure Communities, should remind us of the Alien and Sedition Acts, which this terrible anti-immigrant policy echoes (“Illegal-immigrant scrutiny tightens: Secure Communities to expand in Mass. next week despite objections,” Page A1, May 9). Not only will it aid and abet racial profiling, ravaging community trust in local police. It is also part of a growing federal and executive tendency that heralds the transformation of the United States into a country that appears prepared to declare martial law to enforce public obedience.

Secure Communities is first cousin to the National Defense Authorization Act, which authorizes indefinite detention of anyone judged, by the sole power of the executive, as aiding in “terror.” Anyone who knows the history of world fascism knows that when tyranny is on the march, “aliens” fall first, followed by all dissenters.
