I’m at a loss to understand how something as simple and reasonable as Secure Communities can cause such consternation amongst the progressive faithful (Letters, May 23). The way it works is that fingerprints are sent to federal immigration authorities for EVERYONE who is arrested and fingerprinted. If it is determined that such fingerprints belong to someone who is in the United States illegally, then action may be taken, such as deportation proceedings. There is no profiling involved.
People who reside in our country illegally are at risk of deportation, and that is a fact. Like most reasonable people, I believe in the rule of law, which is the foundation of our society. There are lots of laws on the books with which people disagree, but we still need to obey them. Why is illegal immigration any different?
