editorial | the end of racism?

Lingering effects of racism, from poverty to shorter life span

Jeff Jacoby states that “America’s racist past is dead and gone” (“Stain of racism finally fading in America,” Op-ed, June 27). He argues that the election of a black pastor to lead the Southern Baptist Convention and the election of our first black president are indisputable proof. How then does Jacoby explain how people of color in this country have a higher level of poverty, a widening achievement gap in our schools, a higher incarceration rate in our prisons, a higher unemployment rate in our labor force, a higher infant mortality rate, and a shorter life span? Are these the lingering effects of racism in our country, or does Jacoby have some other explanation? I would love to hear it.
