letters | FLAP OVER VOTER REGISTRATION IN SENATE RACE

Scott Brown shows his true GOP colors

It’s refreshing when that great bipartisan, Senator Scott Brown, shows his true Republican colors, as when he exploded upon learning that the Department of Transitional Assistance is helping citizens in contact with that agency to exercise their right to vote (“Brown rips voter registration effort: Sees political motive in welfare mailing; state says it was part of settlement,” Page A1, Aug. 9).

Some Republicans couch their vote-suppression activity in the guise of preventing fraud, but give Brown credit for honesty: He’s outraged because poor people are more likely to vote Democratic.

Deborah, let me ask you, how long have we been voting in this country, this is not something new, I object to my tax dollars going to this effort. If you want to get the vote out fine, you don't need to spend 275,000. to do it, no other states are doing this. Go to city hall and register, it's free.

And I don't like my tax dollars going to subsidize big oil, big agribiz etc. and they cost a heck of a lot moe loot. Damned poor people are so inconvenient to have around and now they want to vote. Another damned entitlement program!

Democrats use methods like this and Republicans use methods like proving your identity at the polls and they get bashed for advocating that. They are both trying to level the playing field so what's good for one is good for the other. We are a great country with the ability to choose the leaders we want. Poor people on food stamps aren't the only moving populace, many people move and need to re-register. Verifying identities at the polls would only benefit all. Having an ID is needed for many transactions of less importance as a requirement, why shouldn't voting be one of them?

where have they been, they have had to right to vote for how long..........go to city hall and register, not hard.

Oh! How nicely, cleverly put! Thank you! You make the very good point that the rich now have even more power to influence elections than they already had... When we thought it couldn't get any worse... Thank you for your great letter!

There are so many ways and places to register to vote. And we all have busy lives (perhaps more so than welfare recipients since most of us work) as well as other demands on our time and energy. But if we want to vote, we manage to do it without the government actually mailing us registration forms. If people can't bother to register, it's hard to believe they've put much thought into the issues. But hey! they're the people who tend to vote Democrat. And if Dems think getting a picture ID is such a trial (though plenty of poor people seem to have them as they're required so often), they can organize a drive to take people to get them. Then they can hammer home the importance of voting Dem during the ride.
