Athletes’ posturing lowers their stature

RE “WHERE’S the humility?” (Op-ed, Aug. 15): I applaud Jeff Jacoby on his insights about the loss of humility in our athletes and high achievers in other areas. Our preoccupation with fame has driven personal satisfaction in a job well done to the background, and self-aggrandizement has turned the recipients of God-given talents into hucksters begging for adulation. We have ourselves to blame, as the audience has been trained to savor outrageous conduct as an enhancement of the viewing experience, rather than seeing such posturing for the unflattering lack of character that it represents.
