DERRICK Z. Jackson calls for tougher gun laws (“Boston killings a game-changer?” Op-ed, Aug. 18) in the wake of the Dorchester shooting. In Massachusetts, it is already illegal to sell most replicas of a single-action 19th-century revolver. How much tougher does he want it than that?
Jackson is concerned about people who buy guns in other states with more lenient laws and bring them here. But that is already illegal.

Jackson assumes that the guns used in the shooting were legal...fat chance.
Massachusetts is justly proud of its strict gun regulations. Unfortunately, they do not control the flow of guns across our borders. The second amendment is used by the NRA as justification for lax regulation. Effective regulation will only be achieved by the federal government; only a majority of Congress can make this happen. Lots of luck, fellow activists. Too many of our elected leaders have been bought and paid for by a powerful lobby.
