letters | russia’s crackdown on a punk band

Two years in prison is too harsh, but Russian band does deserve some punishment

I APPLAUD Russian authorities for convicting Pussy Riot — the very name suggesting sex and violence — of committing a hate crime against religion. The band willfully, maliciously, and blasphemously desecrated a Russian Orthodox Church.

Everyone has a right to freedom of expression. This includes those who were attending the religious service in question. These people’s rights were obviously denied and violated by the surprise guerrilla invasion. Many of them — especially the older and religiously devout — may actually have been seriously traumatized.

An hour of bible school and trying to "understand" religion? I'm all for that because I did the same thing and it turned me into an atheist.

They used to tell the counter-culture back in the sixties, "if you don't like it here, you should go live in Russia!" Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Disrupting a church service here would mean maybe a disturbing the peace misdemeanor fine, not a heavy prison sentence. Hope you like borscht and living under a Tsar.
