Conservatives may give to the needy, but liberals seek to end need in the first place

RE “STINGY liberals” (Op-ed, Aug. 22): Jeff Jacoby’s deployment of The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s generosity survey distorts the issues.

Firstly, Jacoby accepts the Chronicle’s definition of “generosity” as the giving of money only, and ignores the fact that charity also comes in the form of time, expertise, and practical aid. Many Massachusetts philanthropists choose these forms of giving because they build actual connections between the givers and those being helped. Does Jacoby really believe that conservatives show more “personal generosity” because a study finds that they write more checks?
