Step carefully around that six-legged robot

JOSH REYNOLDS FOR THE BOSTON GLOBE

As an MIT-trained engineer and professional geek, I applaud the “Stompy” project to build a large six-legged rideable robot (“Robot project takes shape,” Metro, Sept. 3).

However, as an older and relatively cautious person, I note that while the volunteer participants do wear safety glasses, there is at least one person pictured wearing sandals while working in a metal fabrication environment that is filled with large heavy objects.

Although hard hats and steel-toed safety shoes are probably too much to expect for a hobbyist project, sandals should certainly be a no-no.

In future stories about this impressive project, I want to read about its successes without any references to people injured along the way.
