The problems at Boston University and elsewhere are symptoms of a bigger problem. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is essentially running a minor league sports empire masquerading as an educational endeavor. It’s high time we end the farce of student athletes.
The NCAA and the colleges are making billions of dollars off the ambitions of talented athletes, many of whom are not remotely serious about their academics. Let those players sign contracts, earn wages, and be separated from colleges and dormitories. As it stands now, the so-called nonprofit colleges are reaping a fortune at an unconscionable cost.
