Don’t blame economic mess on any one group

THOSE GLOBE readers, and columnists, who would like to believe and espouse that the economic mess were are in is because of those “wealthy people” or those heartless Republicans, should read again Farah Stockman’s article on “United States, incorporated” (Op-ed, Oct. 16). Especially insightful are the facts she presented on Medicaid and Medicare.

Whereas our president would like to espouse such nonsense that taxing the wealthy is the way to a solution, Stockman’s article points out that our economic problems did not start with any one group of Americans.

Well, you are welcome to run for office on a platform that people should diet and die according to actuarial tables if you like. Sounds a lot like the 'death panels' to me.

The aritcles and opinions you mention must be specific to your "local" Globe, as I've not seen them in my publication. I don't think anyone blames the Republicans alone, whereas the Republicans blame Obama alone. Funny. The fact is, this has been going on for decades, and nothing has been done to fix the situation. But, where you seem to think that medicare and medicaid are to blame, I would suggest that tax breaks to big corporations like oil and gas producers that gouge the public while making huge profits, or corporations like GE that pay no taxes what so ever and offshore as many jobs as they can would get my share of blame. Also, never in our history have we been ingaged in a war (let alone two!) and LOWERED taxes. People like to point to Reagan as the epitome of perfection in leadership. Do you realize what the tax rate on the wealthy was under him? 50%!!! What did Romney pay? 14%. And now, Romney's plan is to LOWER the amount of taxes the uber wealthy like him pay? If Republicans had their way, we would be back in a society where there were Alms Houses and Debtor's prisons. (where else would the poor live?) A civilized society does not let the poor suffer and die so that the wealthy can keep a greater percentage of their money to buy private planes and yachts

And with what would you replace the Federal Government, Mr. FitzPatrick? The Articles of Confederation? The Royal Charter after rescinding the Declaration of Independence? Perhaps Massachusetts should rescind Maine's statehood and reincorporate a breakaway province back into the Commonwealth? The last time I checked our government was made up of citizens of this union. If you don't like how it is at the moment, look in the mirror.
