letters | hurricane stirs climate concerns

When will we begin to grapple with reality?

As I wrote this on Monday, the wind was whipping through my neighborhood. Trees were swaying like blades of grass. I wondered whether the power would stay on to allow me to complete this letter.

In spite of the roar of this gargantuan storm, and in spite of the 60 million people it could affect, there has been a deafening silence about what allowed this and other intense storms to gather.

When will we lift the veil and begin to grapple with the reality that it is climate change that has set this stage? We’re in it whether we acknowledge it or not. Let’s get to work on reducing carbon dioxide and preparing our infrastructure to withstand the effects we can’t change.
