It’s hard to know where to begin with Jennifer Graham’s tragically misguided and ill-informed op-ed “Save the church! (kill the organs)” (Oct. 25). Perhaps Graham has been subjected to some sort of traumatic affront to her religious and artistic sensibilities. If so, I suggest she seek therapy by attending any one of the numerous churches with great organs, organists, and music programs that can be found throughout Boston and its suburbs. (Hint: They are the churches with full parking lots and pews, though, sadly, many of them are not Catholic).
I would also submit that it is not the organ that drives people from church, but poorly played organs, even more poorly written music, and, worst of all, insipid sermons and homilies.

When C.S. Lewis went through his conversion from athiest to Christian, he dreaded the thought of going to church to worship the God he discovered because he hated organ music. He also discovered the early service without music and that suited him fine.
