Notion of personal liberty is lost in debate over ‘death with dignity’

RE “END-OF-LIFE discussions, care should come before Question 2”: The Globe’s opposition to the “death with dignity” ballot question (Editorial, Nov. 2) reflects a rather odd political and philosophical phenomenon.

The culturally conservative right opposes the initiative because it seems to place in the hands of man decisions that should be left to God.

Yes, you have a point about the pregnant woman.  If we are consistent about human rights, we take the rights of all people into account.  Before Roe v Wade, Ted Kennedy and the rest of the liberal left were very against abortion.  They didn't consider it a "right" as you would not consider murdering a right.  The inconsistancy is in the views of the parties, neither of which has consistancy on life issues.  Republicans want to exterminate those who are criminal and the Democrats want to freely rid themselves of unwanted and unfathered children.

Having lost two students in to suicide this summer, I can assure you that this law will have victims that are unintended.  If we as a society say that suicide is okay if there is true suffering, we give that okay to thousands of hurting and depressed people.  We simply cannot do this.

I understand and applaud your compassion and I urge you to extend that compassion to the rest of our society as well.

It comes down to whether our lives are our own to determine as we see fit or whether our living or dying is to be left up to Fate or to the act of some mysterious deity.

VOTE YES for the right to own your own life and to choose your own time and place of death.

I've always wondered why Silverglate was never nominated for the supreme court
