Petraeus’s fall: a confusion of leadership with conquest the seems to bedevil only men

Reflecting on retired General David Petraeus’s resignation as director of the CIA, Kevin Cullen offers a thoughtful exploration of the tremendous stress that repeated deployment to hostile war-torn areas places on individuals and their marriages (“Scandal highlights the strains of modern war,” Page A2, Nov. 11).

Despite those arguments, I find myself marveling at yet another prominent man apparently unable to control his impulses in order to uphold his vow of marital fidelity.

Your next letter should be about women who succumb to men of power.

While the General may have proved himself, like many other men, capable of giving in to temptation during stressful situations, it is also germaine to bear in mind that the investigation that led to this discovery had as its source threats made by Paula Broadwell against Jill Kelley, whom she saw as a romantic rival. Therefore it is possible that Broadwell was the one with the aggressive impulses. To assume anything without a full revelation of facts only sheds light on your own biases, Ms. Perlman. The individuals involved will now have to deal with the consequences of their actions, as will their families, which is the far greater harm. Additionally, let us hope no other non-involved parties were put in harm's way because of this.

Could it be something to do with the name 'Paula," rather than male conquest?

That poor, helpless, victim (Broadwell). She was conquered by a (powerful) man. Please go straight to your library Ms. Pearlman and begin reading about women's liberation. Than we can have a conversation about 'choice'. Thanks in advance

Why aren't women held equally responsible when these things happen? Both are married. Both were attracted to each other. Is it because the person holding a powerful position is the bad guy and the woman is innocent of wrongdoing because she's not holding a high level office? It takes two to tango and if both are married, both are guilty of irresponsibility especially to their families.
