Marriage has had many definitions throughout history

Jeff Jacoby ignores history by asserting that in most of America marriage means what it has always meant (“Gay marriage should be at the ballot box,” Op-ed, Nov. 14). Marriage has had many definitions throughout history, and the understanding of marriage that Jacoby thinks is eternal is a fairly recent one, and one that, even now, is not even close to being universal.

One can't help but wonder if the hysterical opponents of gay marriage have really thought this through. Would they prefer that couples live in sin, or would it be better to at least have their union legally recognized by the state, if not sanctified by their religion as well?
