Cause of transgender rights is the larger issue

Nov. 20 was international Transgender Day of Remembrance, and the Globe’s only reference to transgender rights that I saw was an article about inmate Michelle Kosilek’s facial hair removal as part of her request for a sex-change operation (“Judge may stay his ruling on sex-change surgery,” Metro). Stories like this ongoing saga of a convicted murderer’s request for gender identity treatment are rare; what is unfortunately all too common is the murder of transgender individuals simply because of who they are.

According to, the website of the international Transgender Day of Remembrance, more than 60 transgender individuals around the world were murdered in 2012 alone, and these statistics do not even begin to reflect the true numbers.
