John F. Murphy writes: The citizens signing those petitions to secede should be reminded of the pledge they each made. Every last one of them must have recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag countless times during their lifetimes. The Pledge of Allegiance is an obligation of loyalty to “the United States of America,” and when these citizens signed petitions urging their state to go it alone, they violated this pledge.
