It took an anti-communist Republican like Richard Nixon to do what no Democrat dared to try when Nixon unexpectedly sought détente with Mao’s China. Now it appears that a supposedly liberal Democrat like Barack Obama is prepared to do what no Republican president has risked doing openly: weaken the social safety net, the Democratic Party’s foremost legacy since the Great Depression.

"Republicans, whose policies created the deficit..." Dear Lord, on what planet does spending increases NOT increase the deficit? It is this type of ignorance that will sway the congress to raise tax rates. In a static scoring calculation, this will raise about $80 Billion per year, while our deficit is over $1 Trillion. The deficit will not go down unless spending is reduced. Long term, this must include entitlements. Short of that, our country will slide into Greek style bankruptcy.
