Re “Freedom from unions” (Op-ed, Dec. 12): Jeff Jacoby praises the deceptively named right-to-work legislation enacted this month in Michigan, and concludes, “The essential issue is liberty.” I’m pleased he has boiled his case down to that, and he is right, but for the wrong reason. It is the unions that are fighting for liberty. If unions are crushed and the power of corporations over employees — in hiring, firing, work conditions, wages, and benefits — becomes absolute, what sort of “liberty” will employees have then?
Modern society imposes many limits on personal liberty. All we can hope for is a balance among these limits. Unions are essential to this balance. Emasculating unions would deprive all workers of liberty, and aren’t we all workers?

This author favors the crushing of corporations thru absolute union power. One of numerous example is the demise of General Motors - crushed by absolute union power. Loss of thousands of jobs.
