Gun control backers should join NRA, then steer it to sanity

I AM a gun owner, but not a member of the NRA. The adamant anti-gun control-stance of the NRA leadership is out of touch with reality.

Since all attempts at pressuring the organization to changes its ways have failed thus far, I would like to suggest a simple remedy. All people, gun owners or otherwise, who think there is no earthly reason for such lethal weaponry to be in the hands of civilians should join the NRA en masse. We can then force change in that body from within.
