Democrats have legacy of denying civil rights

THE 1965 Voting Rights Act would not have passed the Senate had not Republicans voted 94 percent in favor of the bill, compared with only 73 percent of the Democratic senators who supported it .

Among the Democratic senators voting against the legislation : Sam Ervin, Richard Russell, Herman Talmadge, John C. Stennis, and John Sparkman.
