PRESENTED AS a heartwarming story of a woman and her bear, the article about Maureen Clark and Victoria is far from cute and cuddly to those who know the truth behind animal exploitation (“For the love of a bear, she tames time and nature,” Page A1, Jan. 7).
Bears and other animals kept to entertain humans do not live happy lives, and do not derive pleasure from performing. They are separated from their families, confined, deprived of stimulation, and forced to perform regardless of their physical or mental state.

You hit the nail on the head, Ms. D'Aleo! I'd take it way further. I believe, (with the exception or Refuges for purposes Extincion Avoidance), are entrinsically harmful to wild animals, and in may cases straight abuse. I'd be very happy to see the Zoo as we know it, and any animal performing whatsoever, gone baby, gone.
