In his Jan. 12 op-ed “Hard facts vs. big truths,” about the controversy over the film “Zero Dark Thirty,” Neal Gabler suggests that a film should be judged on the basis of whether it serves some larger truths (such as truths about obsession or bureaucracy). However, one must also judge a film by its effect on society. After all, propaganda films often are embellished with so-called truths.
