letters | WRAPPING OUR HEADS AROUND MEDICAL MARIJUANA LAW

Opportunities for citizens to learn more, speak out

Kay Lazar’s Jan. 29 article “Mass. seeks input on medical marijuana” notes that the Department of Public Health will be holding “listening sessions” this month to get input on the implementation of legalized medical marijuana. While a large majority of people voted for this law allowing access to medical marijuana for people with chronic and life-threatening illnesses, there are a number of health implications that were not clearly addressed by the referendum.

In particular, there is no clarity about how the regulations will prevent increasing youth access to this drug for recreational use, despite the mounting evidence of its effects on the not-fully-formed adolescent brain. As a result, the Boston Alliance for Community Health is sponsoring a forum Feb. 12 to educate Bostonians about the various ways residents can affect where and how the law will be implemented in the city. We believe that this will enable people to give informed advice to the Department of Public Health as the agency implements the law this year.
