Think of it as a useful product, with need for a few precautions

Cannabis is simply a substance that can be used properly or improperly depending on how it is managed. That is the lesson I took from your fine article on clinics in New Mexico (“Medical marijuana law takes form,” Page A1, Feb. 6). In fact, some of the required measures seem paranoid, given that cannabis has fewer negative effects than many medications that are freely prescribed and dispensed daily.

If authorities treat cannabis as a useful product needing a few precautions to guard safety, the public will increasingly see it as such.
