RE “Cyclists say their rights go unrecognized” by Martine Powers (Page A1, Feb. 15): So, what is the real source of disregard that Boston-area bicyclists experience? Motorists hate bicyclists. This is the conclusion I must come to, based on my own experiences.
I imagine many motorists think: Traffic is frustrating enough without having to deal with slow, annoying bicyclists. So, if a few bicyclists get hurt, well, it serves them right for slowing us down.

I agree wholeheartedly. But I would not extend the accusation of hatred to all motorists. I would say that somewhere near fifty percent of motorists treat me with courtesy when I am riding my bike. It's the other fifty percent, though, who will kill you. Though very obvious in the motorist-cyclist relationship, I believe that there is a overabundence of aggression in our society in general. Being a pedestrian is only slightly safer. In general, we Americans have lost a sense of decency and respect toward others. We do not treat each other well enough and we are losing our sense of cohesion as a nation because of that fact. There will be a price to pay on many levels.
No doubt, alot of room for improvement within the motoring and wheeling relationship, but physics is physics. Motorized transportation is generally mightier, faster, and less forgiving. Couple that with more "built-in" mechanical and societal distractions facing every driver, riders fairly or not must travel with a greater sense of self preservation. That being said, the "but I had the right of way" lament bymany an unremitting rider need not be one's final lament.
For heaven's sake, Ed, use your energy on your bike and stop complaining. Just do your thing as safely as you can, and don't dwell on what bothers you, or you'll cease to get any benefit out of riding your bike. Peace.
What? Chill out you say? People are being killed. I think Ed's letter is a public service. The issue needs to be keep in the fore until we drastically cut the number of fatalities and injuries.
Sorry, enjoy your bike and trust in the Universe doesn't cut it for me.
I'll admit it. I hate bicyclists. At least in the city. There are enough things to worry about such as trucks, double parkers you have to avoid at the last second, idiots texting while driving AND walking, pedestrians who pop out of nowhere and cross streets with no regard to the light patterns, tourists, and on and on. Throw into the mix some crazed fool on a bike darting in and out of traffic or whizzing by my stopped vehicle about an inch away as I am parked and about to exit and I say, you get what you deserve. Save the planet? Try saving your life first. Ride the damn things elswhere.
