Despite its woes, river remains full of life

IN THE Globe’s story on the much-maligned Mystic River (“A steady flow of troubles for the long-foul Mystic,” Page A1, Feb. 18), the writer gave the impression that the river is so dirty that it flows devoid of life and unused. But that is not the case.

Besides the invasive water chestnuts there are the herring and other fish that feed the night herons, blue herons, and other aquatic birds. There are swans that return each year to nest as well as ducks and geese that try to take up residence on the docks of the several boat clubs dotting the river, home to recreational and fishing craft.
