The article “With no deal, cuts will start biting in 1st week of March” (Page A5, Feb. 24) notes that people’s unemployment checks may drop by an average of $132 a month as of late March or early April. In addition, physicians’ Medicare reimbursements would be reduced. A lot of defense and education cuts would also happen if sequestration goes into effect as scheduled on Friday.
Doctors would treat fewer Medicare patients. Jobless people, already struggling to get by on their present benefits, would have an even harder time making ends meet. The article suggests that the impact of sequestration could be eased by cutting Medicare further and cutting Medicaid.

first off greg, the tax rate was just raised to 39.6%, 6 weeks ago. Washington has a spending problem, our leaders couldn't resist putting 30 BILLION DOLLARS in pork project in the hurricane relief bill, what a waste. 15 billion on green energy companies that have now gone bankrupt. We now spend 750 billion a year on 83 different welfare programs,we are a very generous country, stop falling fall the hype out of washington, time to cut spending.
The top 5% pay 38% of the federal taxes and the top 10% pay 58%.
WHO IS IT THAT IS NOT PAYING HTIER FAIR SHARE???
Class warfare is stupid game to be playing when you have no facts!
Funny, I've never heard a poor person complain about class warfare, and they're the ones the wars being waged against.
......and why should they complain? They are benefiting from our country's extensive and generous support programs, with, in many cases, few questions asked.
"Why shouldn’t the wealthy pay their fair share?"
Six people go to dinner, they all order the same thing. The check arrives, do they divide up who owes what based on what each of them earns? No, they divide it up EQUALLY, that is what we call "fair share".
Where did this idea ever start that a "fair share" depends on how much a person makes? Ah, no doubt from some liberal pandering to buy votes.
The US economy is not a "dinner party". Your example couldn't make less sense.
A more accurate example is , "Six people go to a dinner party, they eat up all the food, drink ALL the wine and on the way out, they hand the check to the dishwashers."
......or pay with their EBT checks. By the way, ask the dishwashers, if any can still be found, if they are glad to have a job.
Once again the previous comments enunciate the republican philosophy. "I got mine, screw you."
Once again, ask the increasingly relevant question: "I got yours, and screw you".
I wonder how sequestration will affect the Federal Reserve's ability to continue their quantiive easing strategy. Did anyone know that they are hold $2.7 trillion dollars of debt. And if it wasn't for this buying, the thinking is the economy would be more in the crapper. This is the same strategy being followed worldwide.... London Central Bank, European Central Bank, Bank of Japan) Listen people the stupid, shallow, get me elected politicians have FAILED to tell the people that the crisis of 08 never was solved, It's just been on a slow simmer since it blew it's top.
Rick Santelli on CNBC said of the Federal Reserve Bank and its money printing "The FED is setting a Pick for the politicians". Ben Bernanke keeps saying that the Fed is trying to lower the unemployment rate. But if you watch his body klanguage, you know he doesn't believe it himself.
The wealthy pay the overwhelming majority of taxes right now. How much more would constitite a "fair share"?
That depends.............depends on how much more can be squeezed without a squawk.
But beware--"fair" is being steadily defined "down", and the middle class should have learned by now that THEY are where the money is.
Here's the Left's definition of "Fairness". It's taking money away from those who earned it and giving it back to those who didn't earn it. Also The NY Times said that the Globe must be sold to the Highest Bidder. Therefore one of these evil RICH 1%ers will be an owner of the Boston Globe.
Also, the writer (and the Boston Globe) forgot to tell us that Deval's proposed taxes will be mostly on the Middle Class. Which is getting HAMMERED, according to Elizabeth Warren.
