Letters | Abuse scandal hangs over pope’s exit

Power structure of church prevails

I am a Catholic who grew up in the 1960s and ’70s in St. Agnes Parish in Arlington, where one of the earliest cases of the abuse scandal first came to light. My friends and classmates were altar boys who served with then-priest Eugene O’Sullivan during that era.

I read the article “Cardinals tainted by scandal in Rome to elect new pope” (Page A6, Feb. 27) with interest, as it detailed how, “in the face of accusations that he made unwanted sexual advances toward priests,” Cardinal Keith O’Brien of Britain announced his resignation and that he would not attend the conclave to elect a new pope.
