We’ve done a lot worse than just praise oppressive rulers

In his March 13 Op-ed column “Useful idiots, then and now,” Jeff Jacoby made a good point by criticizing Americans who have said favorable things about oppressive rulers. He could have made a better point by criticizing our government for supporting oppressive autocracies such as Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

He could have made a still better point by criticizing our government’s role in overturning democratically elected governments in such places as Chile and Iran, and installing dictators in their places. Such actions are far more blameworthy than misguided praise for bad guys.
