letters | ROB PORTMAN AND THE POLITICS OF PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

A venting of spleen over conservative’s change of heart

I read your March 16 editorial “Rob Portman: Helping GOP revisit marriage” with interest. I suppose we all should be touched by this heartwarming change of perspective. Sadly, if Senator Portman’s son were not gay, we would probably still be hearing this man demonizing same-sex marriage.

What are we to make of the politics of personal experience? Are we supposed to wait for some other conservative congressman to cross the line for gun control only when his child or grandchild is shot to shreds by a lunatic gunman, or to support abortion when his daughter is raped and becomes pregnant?

Some people will applaud Portman for his newfound sensibility. I find it distressing and only modestly courageous.
