Can pope stand up to the moral ironies?

In one headline in the March 20 edition we read “At inaugural, pope vows to serve the poor” (Page A5).

Meanwhile, nestled among the world news briefs in the same edition is the report that the Catholic Church in the Philippines has been engaging in an all-out assault on that government’s efforts to provide birth control for the poor (“Philippine birth-control law is on hold,” Page A3).

One despairs that Pope Francis will do little to reduce such moral ironies.
