GOP should fix its policies, not its marketing

I was interested to see what the Republican Party’s verdict on the last election would be (“GOP finds wide fault in Romney campaign,” Page A1, March 19). After interviewing 50,000 people and coming up with a 100-page report, the Republicans still don’t get it.

Their primary conclusion was to sharpen their message and work harder to connect with voters. These are both good ideas if you’re in marketing or advertising, but the message is precisely why they lost. The GOP may think its policies are sound, but they are not what most Americans want. No amount of advertising or connecting with voters will make people vote for what they don’t believe in.

Times are changing, and it can be hard to accept that what you truly believe in is no longer the majority opinion. With a country this large, being able to compromise is a good first step in becoming relevant again, but I didn’t see much about that in the GOP report.

Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
