Gay rights: Why they can’t wait

It seems like only yesterday that civil rights advocates were encountering push-back from people who tried to soothe activists by saying that they will antagonize a basically good populace if they agitate, and that they should just wait, as things were going their way anyway. At that point my black roommate exclaimed, “Wait? My family has waited 100 years already.”

Now some justices of the Supreme Court are using the same empty words about gay rights (“Justices cautious on gay marriage,” Page A1, March 27). How easy it is to tell people to wait when you are not the one who has to endure.

Lead, don’t just submit to being dragged into the future.
