Cabs should not be allowed on road with so little insurance coverage

Thank you for the revealing Spotlight articles on the Boston taxi scene (“Driven to the edge,” Page A1, March 31-April 2). It is shocking and outrageous that taxis are being driven with so little insurance coverage.

It has been a hassle, at best, for many people to recover damages from the insurance carriers for taxi companies. They throw up every obstacle they can to avoid, or at least delay, paying, even when their liability is beyond question.

But to allow taxis on the streets without assuring that the insurance they carry is adequate to pay for the damage they may cause is irresponsible in the extreme.

It is a disgraceful dereliction of duty on the part of public officials who are responsible for overseeing this industry.
