Too steep a price to pay for bin Laden

I WAS horrified to read that the Taliban is targeting health workers in Pakistan, preventing children from receiving polio vaccinations in a part of the world where this preventable disease is tragically common (“Officer killed guarding polio team,” April 11).

I was even more horrified to learn why: The Taliban accuse health teams of being spies, because the US did indeed use a fake vaccination campaign in the effort to identify Osama bin Laden’s hideout.

How many children in poverty and their health care missions will now suffer and die for that one expedient decision to cut the head off the snake only to see how many ways it can grow back? Someone should be held accountable, this is not how to win hearts and minds with any values I know of.
