Democracy prevails, but the struggle is costly

My sincere condolences to victims’ families and to all Bostonians over the attack at the Boston Marathon. At first, I couldn’t believe that such a terrible thing could happen at a marathon. Then I realized that what happened in Boston is just the latest attack on democracy following a series of attacks. Perhaps the first one took place where I live, in the town of Marathon, Greece.

In the 2,503 years since, democracy has prevailed, against all odds, over and over. The spirit of argument and reason and a community of equals have nothing to fear in the face of despotism, self-righteousness, and fanaticism. Yet sadly, this struggle inevitably takes loved ones away from us. Walking by the Tomb of the Athenians, I could see the Pile, as the mound is known, grow a bit bigger.
