Let’s end orgy of self-congratulation

WHEN WE celebrate death and harm, even when it is done to those who have harmed us, we are no better than they are. Let us choose instead to be greater than the sum of these hateful acts, to extend our humanity, to suspend the orgy of self-congratulatory behavior — if for no other reason than because we should be wary of those who exploit it for commercial or political gain.

Take down the “Boston Strong” signs and billboards; clear away the piles of stuffed animals, candles, and other tributes. Demonstrate that we are truly “Boston Strong” by turning away from self-indulgent behavior. Instead demonstrate our strength by extending kindness to strangers, maintaining courtesy even when we are rushed and hurried, and by expanding our understanding when we consider and interact with those different than us.
