Murderers will pay for their crimes with lifetime behind bars

In “Tsarnaev and the death penalty” (Op-ed, May 8) Jeff Jacoby writes that “70 percent of Americans want Dzhokhar Tsarnaev put to death if he is convicted of the Boston Marathon bombing” — “which is another way of saying” that the same percentage is pro-capital punishment. History reveals many examples where majority opinion reflected a gross injustice against fundamental human rights. Majority opinion in a society does not necessarily equate with justice.

Killing people is fundamentally wrong, no matter who does the killing. Convicted murderers will pay for their crimes with a lifetime of incarceration, forfeiting their liberty, while society remains secure from any future threat. An eye-for-an-eye mentality does little to advance a modern society.
