Support for protest sends signal to Palestinians that they are not alone

Thank you for your editorial regarding physicist Stephen Hawking’s decision to heed the Palestinian boycott call (“Stephen Hawking: peaceful protest, angry outcry,” May 11). You are right to note that this is nonviolent resistance. For too long we have heard calls for Palestinian nonviolence and yet countless Palestinian demonstrators are brutally repressed or arrested by Israel’s military occupation while the world is silent. This silence tells Palestinians that they have no right to resist oppression.

However, with your supportive editorial, you have sent a different message to supporters of Palestinian rights: that they are not alone. Thank you for adding your voice to the voices for justice and peace in Palestine.
